Some low cost alternatives

The main cost of small self built Radio Control planes are motors and the Receivers .... there are a few cheap options (prices are approximate):

Motors
The Parkzone gearboxes as replacement parts are quite expensive,  but there are cheap ones:

  $7
This motor is same size as the ParkZone CHAMP / T-28 etc motor but you need to change the pinion gear.

  $4

Receivers that work with popular Transmitters
Hitec (Aurora/Optima) Rx

$14
Spektrum (DSM2) Compatible Receivers
With standard servo connectors.
6 channel 3.7g with case removed.$6

A lighter 2.5g 4 channel version $10

The same receiver but 2g and with micro connectors for the 1.7g and 2.2g HobbyKing servos. $10

An excellent alternative for Spektrum transmitters.

The Lemon range of DSM2/DSMX compatibles have a good reputation for reliability and quality. They make two low cost 6 channel receivers with JST-SH 1.00mm (AR6400 brick) type connectors and JST-ZH 1.5mm (AR 6300 type) connectors. Unfortunately none with the Molex Picoblade 1.25mm connector found on the 1.7 and 2.2 g servos.

The 6 channel is however available in a "no-pin" version at US$5.75 and 1.4g which makes an excellent small receiver if you solder the servos directly to the board.
